SVIPLA is pleased to present Stephen Quake, Lee Otterson Professor in the Stanford University School of Engineering and Professor of Bioengineering, Applied Physics and Physics, as its 2013 Inventor of the Year. Please join us on December 19 at the Hyatt Regency in Santa Clara to honor Professor Quake.
The Human Frontier Science Program Organization (HFSPO) recently presented to Professor Quake the 2013 HFSP Nakasone Award for his pioneering inventions and discoveries that made innovative physical techniques available for biology and that are revolutionizing biophysics, biological automation, genome analysis, and personalized medicine. His work is making it easy to answer and, in some cases, to ask questions that were previously impossible to address, and has profound impact for nearly every area of biology.
Through his work Stephen Quake developed key technologies that enabled advances in a broad range of fields from single molecule biophysics to molecular biology and microbial ecology. New large-scale quantitative approaches are revolutionizing nearly every aspect of the biological sciences. he is directly responsible for a truly remarkable number of these innovations, which is reflected in the large number of widely cited papers and patents he has published.
Professor Quake's interests lie at the nexus of physics, biology and biotechnology. His group pioneered the development of Microfluidic Large Scale Integration (mLSI), demonstrating the first integrated microfluidic devices with thousands of mechanical valves. This technology is helping to pave the way for large scale automation of biology at the nanoliter scale, and he and his students have been exploring applications of lab-on-a-chip technology in functional genomics, genetic analysis, and structural biology. Professor Quake is also active in the field of single molecule biophysics. His current research includes single molecule biophysics, precision force measurement, micro and nano fabrication with soft materials, integrated microfluidics and large scale biological automation.
