SVIPLA is pleased to announce its Inventor of the Year Recipient, Shuji Nakamura, Ph.D., the inventor of the first bright blue LED from gallium nitride and the blue laser, and recently developed bright green and white LEDs and the green diode laser. This technology has revolutionized the lighting and semiconductor industries. He is an inventor on over 200 patents.
The development of nitride based semiconductors, by Prof. Nakamura, represents one of the most important achievements in the materials science of semiconductors in the last 30 years. Not stopping there, he is currently tackling the development of nonpolar and semipolar GaN LEDs as well as a green diode laser.
In 2006, he received the Millennium Prize for his work on LEDs and the blue laser. He noted that the award of this prize helps people to understand that this invention makes it possible to improve the quality of life for millions of people. Not only is it just a source of light for enormous energy savings, but an innovation in the sterilization of drinking water and for storing data in more efficient ways.
